Malta recorded the lowest household energy consumption per person in the European Union in 2024, according to new Eurostat figures.The average person in Malta used 214 kilograms of oil equivalent (KGOE) of energy at home last year, well below the EU average of 507 KGOE. Portugal (260 KGOE) and Spain (284 KGOE) followed as the next lowest consumers.At the other end of the scale, Finland topped the list with 954 KGOE per person, followed by Austria (755) and Estonia (713).Eurostat noted that households in southern Europe generally consume much less energy than those in northern countries due to milder climates and lower demand for winter heating.Across the EU, household energy consumption has fallen by 9% since 2019, reaching its current average of 507 KGOE per inhabitant.Do you think Maltese households do enough to save energy?•
