The Denver Broncos have ambitious plans to build a new $4 billion stadium, but the team is already facing ‘frustration’ over the process.Empower Field at Mile High has been home to the AFC West franchise since the turn of the millennium, and is known to offer one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL.The Broncos want to move out of Mile High by 2031, with eyes on a $4bn stadiumGettyBut come 2031, the Broncos want to be playing at Burnham Yard, a short distance away from their current home in Denver.The project, which would see the team build a privately funded facility that features a retractable roof, was unveiled last September.But it has not quite developed as hoped in the 11 months since.Broncos have concern over status of new stadium project“It’s been almost a year since we announced Burnham Yard as our preferred site,” Broncos president Damani Leech told reporters over the weekend, when he also admitted PSLs could be used to help fund the new facility.“It remains our preferred site. We’re laser focused on delivering it by 2031. It’s been a great effort by ownership, ourselves, the staff, the city.”While the timeline remains the same, Leech admitted frustration over parts of the stadium project that remain out of the team’s control.“I’ve got to be honest, I wish we were further along in some areas than we are now,” he added.“I think areas where we do control, particularly real estate, you mentioned Burnham Yard, real estate, engaging with the community, we’ve done site tours of the location, the design of the stadium continues to evolve, the master plan continues to evolve.“All of those things are moving along really, really well, but we also understand that we can’t do this alone.“There are certain things we don’t control. More recently here, it’s been on more of a staff level.“We’re eager to engage with those community members directly, understand what they’re looking for, what needs and interests they have on the development.“Things like that, we have to continue to progress. We said many months ago, this is an ambitious timeline, so for that to happen, we need everybody to be involved. We can’t do it alone in order to get to 2031.“I’ll be honest, there are days when I have concern. There are days when I have frustration because you can’t control it all, so I think that’s fair.”Despite some clear frustrations, Leech believes a new Broncos stadium by 2031 — when the lease for Mile High expires — is ‘still achievable for sure.’Manica adds $4bn Broncos stadium to NFL portfolioThe team has five years to get it done, and took a step forward this past weekend by appointing Manica Architecture to design their proposed facility.The Broncos have turned to Mancia to design their new stadiumGettyOn Saturday, the Broncos also confirmed that Denver-based Tryba Architects will lead the plan and design for an entertainment district, which will surround the stadium.“Understanding what this team means to its great fans in Denver and across Broncos Country, Manica is honored to be chosen as the lead design architect of the Broncos’ new retractable-roof stadium,” firm owner and president David Manica said in a statement.“We are committed to delivering a world-class fan experience at the center of the enhancements the Broncos will be adding to the local neighborhoods.”The Kansas City-based Manica has vast experience in stadium design, and is responsible for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and the new Nissan Stadium in Nashville, while the firm is also working with the Chiefs on their new facility.
