We still have more than a year and a half to wait until The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event is released in April 2028. I’m keeping a close eye on that ambitious project from director Sam Mendes, but in the meantime, I’m looking forward to another new Beatles-related project called Hamburg Days, a 6-part mini-series scheduled to hit the BBC sometime in 2027, though we still don’t have an exact date yet, nor do we know when and how it will be released in the U.S. I’m still very excited about it. The Show Will Cover The Very Early Days Of The Beatles In GermanyThe show, which is a book-to-screen adaptation from the autobiographical It Started in Hamburg by Klaus Voorman, will explore the band in the days before they became the biggest band in the world. Voorman, as many Beatles fans will know, was a key character in the band’s life, not just in Hamburg in the early ‘60s, but throughout their days as a band and across their solo careers. Voorman famously designed the album cover for the seminal Beatles album, Revolver, and was a fixture on the scene with the band. Voorman is serving as a consultant on the mini-series as well. Voorman first met the Fab Four in Hamburg when the band was playing during one of the legendary residencies that they played in Germany when they were just starting. Voorman became a key member of the band’s inner circle, and later played bass on numerous solo albums by the members of the band after The Beatles broke up. It’s safe to say that he had a front-row seat to much of The Beatles' career, including the very early days. He was part of the art scene in Hamburg in those days that also included artist and photographer Astrid Kirchherr, who will also be a major character in the series. Hamburg Days Is Expected To Air In 2027Much like the Sam Mendes movies won’t be on the 2026 movie schedule, Hamburg Days likely won’t be on the 2026 TV schedule. As of August 2026, the mini-series doesn’t have a release date set, but according to the BBC, production started in May. I think it’s reasonable to expect the series sometime in early 2027. Production hit a snag, tragically, when German actress Luna Jordan, who was cast to play Kirchherr, suddenly passed away in May at just age 26. That role will now be played by Lea Drinda.Drinda will be joined by a core of up-and-coming actors playing the Mop Tops: Ellis Murphy as Paul McCartney, Rhys Mannion as John Lennon, Harvey Brett as George Harrison, Patrick Gilmore as Pete Best, and Louis Landau as Stuart Sutcliffe. They will be joined by Jonny Lee Miller as Jim McCartney (Paul’s dad), Christine Tremarco as Mimi Smith (John’s aunt), and Asa Butterfield as Beatles manager Brian Epstein. There has been much written and filmed about The Beatles over the years, and these early events will be yet another welcome addition to the canon, and I can’t wait to watch.
