Wagering on U.S. races during the month of July experienced nearly a 4.5% decrease, while available purses saw an increase compared to a year ago, according to information released by Equibase on Tuesday.Total wagering of $908,834,520 on races during the month represented a 4.48% decrease over the same period from 2025, while available purses of over $108 million were higher by 3.59%. The figure of over $104 million for paid purses in July was also up by 3.60%.As for the total number of race days, they also increased sightly from 370 to 375 (+1.35%) and the number of U.S. races was lower from 2,903 in July 2025 to last month's tally of 2,861 (-1.45%).Average field size in July was down a tick from over a year ago when it was 6.98, and checked in at an average of 6.92 runners–a decrease of 0.90%. As for average daily wagering, it decreased by 5.75% to $2,423,559, and the average available purse number per race day was up 2.21% to $289,022 from the figure of $282,766 in 2025.When it comes to the year-to-date figures, through July of 2025 wagering on U.S. races came in at $6.737-billion, while this year the amount was $6.433-billion (-4.51%).
