An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 occurred after midnight on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, at 12:30 am local time near San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos, Estado de Baja California Sur, Mexico, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 8.50 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3 as well. A third agency, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.3.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Vista Colorada (pop. 160) located 7 km from the epicenter, San Jose del Cabo (pop. 136,300) 9 km away, La Playa (pop. 1,400) 10 km away, and Las Veredas (pop. 10,500) 19 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cabo San Lucas (pop. 202,700) located 27 km from the epicenter, Colonia del Sol (pop. 48,000) 27 km away, and Las Palmas (pop. 11,600) 28 km away.
