Ronald Exantus, the man responsible for the 2015 killing of 6-year-old Logan Tipton, has been released from prison. According to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, Exantus walked out as a free man on Wednesday afternoon and is not currently required to be admitted to any mental health facility or hospital. According to WKYT and the New York Post, the Kentucky Department of Corrections noted in a written statement, “Pursuant to state laws passed by Kentucky’s General Assembly, Ronald Exantus has served the sentence issued by the Woodford Circuit Court and has been released. He is no longer in the custody of the Department of Corrections. The Kentucky Parole Board did not release Exantus, and he was not released early.” On December 7, 2015, Exantus, who was a former dialysis nurse, broke into the Tipton family home in Versailles, Kentucky, per the Post. While the young boy was sleeping, Exantus attacked him, stabbing him repeatedly in the head with a kitchen knife. During the same home invasion, he also stabbed Logan’s father, Dean Tipton, and two of Logan’s sisters. One of the sisters, Dakota, later recounted the moment she saw Exantus killing Logan while the boy screamed. “We recognize the fear, frustration, and concern this release has caused” According to the NY Post, during his 2018 trial, attorneys for Exantus argued that he was genetically schizophrenic and the jury found him not guilty of murder by reason of insanity. Recently, a TikToker found the phone of her friend’s murderer, a conviction he allegedly escaped because of an insanity plea. Exantus was instead convicted of assault charges related to the attacks on the rest of the family and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The NY Post noted that Exantus had first been released on October 1, 2025, after serving about 8 years. However, he was quickly rearrested in Florida eight days later for failing to register as a convicted felon and violating his parole. He was then extradited to Kentucky to serve the remainder of his sentence. However, Kentucky law allowed him to accrue nearly nine years of credit, leading to his early release. Defense attorney Dan Carman explained to WKYT that these credits are not uncommon, noting that programs like earning a GED or maintaining good behavior can knock days off a sentence. Per WKYT, Kelli Kearney, the 14th Judicial Circuit Commonwealth’s Attorney, stated that her office did everything possible to keep the public safe, but the release is ultimately governed by state law. She stated, “We recognize the fear, frustration, and concern this release has caused the Tipton family and our community. We share those concerns and remain committed to pursuing justice and advocating for victims.” The reaction from the Tipton family has been one of pure outrage and heartbreak. In a Facebook post, Dean Tipton expressed his deep despair over the situation. “The judge and jury gave this monster a slap on the wrist…while handing down a life sentence to my family,” he wrote. I have woke up everyday, put on my fake a** smile and have carried on with life and literally living through hell. Today though, I’m having a hard time trying to figure out how to go on with life. Knowing that this monster gets to walk free and live his life, while I lay in this bed and my baby boy is in the grave. This may be my breaking point.” Per WKYT, Republican Rep. T.J. Roberts, who helped pass Logan’s Law to address issues with the insanity defense and parole procedures, also expressed his anger. “What I’m going to say is this: stay out of Kentucky. We are not the place for you,” Roberts said. He further noted that the justice system had failed the family again. Logan’s Law is now in effect. However, per reports, it does not apply retroactively to Exantus, which is why he was able to walk free. Roberts insists that more work needs to be done, particularly regarding how families are notified when offenders are released. He reportedly stated, “I don’t care how long it takes, we’re going to make sure that victims and the families of victims, once someone is convicted of a crime, that they are entitled to every bit of information that you would want in the event that you are unfortunate enough to go through what this incredible family has gone through.”
