The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned sale of old monk and other alcoholic beverage makers. Manufacturers allegedly used external flavouring substances to mimic natural tastes and aromas. These products should be labelled as "flavoured spirit" to avoid misleading consumers. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of artificial flavours in several product samples. An Old Monk rum variant's "7 years old blended" claim was also found to be misleading.
