According to german media *Bild*, the clubs had reached an agreement of a loan with a 5m option to buy. However after the player completed his medicals, Napoli tried to change the option with an obligation, which prompted Schalke to pull out of the deal. Napoli released a press statement, denying the allegations and instead claiming that Schalke sent a request at 13:00 to alter unspecified financial payment details of the deal. Napoli replied at 13:22 that it was open for further negotiations, but there was no further contact until 17:33 when Schalke told them they were not interested anymore.
