The U.S. men’s national team will seek an early advancement into the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 stage, but standing in the way is a familiar foe in Australia. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad will resume Group D play on Friday at Lumen Field, facing off with another opponent that they met in last fall’s preparatory window. Similar to Paraguay, who the Americans met last November, the Socceroos were one of the USMNT’s final opponents of 2025.Jordan Bos opened the scoring in that encounter but a brace from Haji Wright propelled the USMNT to a 2-1 victory in Commerce City, Colorado. Coincidentally, injured USMNT star forward Christian Pulisic was substituted off after 31 minutes in that match due to a hamstring injury on the night. Pulisic has continued to train individually this week after suffering a slight calf issue in Friday’s 4-1 romp over Paraguay. Several of the USMNT’s leading talents were not part of the October matchup including left back Antonee Robinson, midfielders Tyler Adams and Gio Reyna, and attacker Ricardo Pepi. In addition, Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beech was not part of Tony Popovic’s squad last fall, but has since forced his way in, recently making eight saves in a 2-0 group stage victory over Turkey. Midfielder Captain and centerback Harry Souttar, midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler, and forward Tete Yengi are among the players who featured against Turkey and did not play in the October loss to the USMNT. Both the USMNT and Australia are much changed roster-wise since their last meeting, with several absentees and a lot of different choices made by Pochettino and Popovic respectively. Here is a rundown of who remains on the USMNT and Australia rosters in comparison to the October showdown:USMNT Goalkeepers: Matt Freese, Matt Turner, Chris Brady Defenders: Chris Richards, Miles Robinson, Mark McKenzie, Tim Ream, Max Arfsten, Alex Freeman.Midfielders: Malik Tillman, Weston McKennie, Cristian Roldan, Brenden Aaronson.Forwards: Folarin Balogun, Haji Wright, Tim Weah, Christian Pulisic.Australia Goalkeepers: Matt Ryan, Paul Izzo.Defenders: Jordan Bos, Cameron Burgess, Alessandro Circati, Jacob Italiano, Jason Geria, Milos Degenek.Midfielders: Aiden O’Neill, Nestory Irankunda, Connor Metcalfe, Ajdin Hrustic, Cameron Devlin.
