I live in a small town, and the only two food banks I know of, one is only accessible for people who have food stamps, which I think is stupid, if you have food stamps, you're less likely to NEED a food bank. The other one, the one my mom's husband goes to, he'll bring home huge amounts of food, but it's all bad. Like, he brought home an entire flat of strawberries, but out of 6 or 8 clamshells, there were only one clamshell of strawberries worth keeping. Which is still good for 2 people, but what if you're a family of 5? I would be on food stamps, except when I applied last time, they ran my insurance as well (which they do to everyone in my state) and they screwed up after my interview over the phone, and didn't flip the switch, and I lost my insurance for a month and had to go back to the DES office 4x with more and more info. They said I was 1 day late with the proof that I wasn't working 5 full-time jobs (like it said in their system, when would I even find the time?!) and so I'd have to reapply to get food stamps. I'm so afraid of another snafu and losing my insurance again, that I haven't reapplied, even though I really need the help.
