A major milestone has been reached in Malta’s second interconnector project with the inauguration of the Nexans Electra, a state-of-the-art cable-laying vessel that will soon begin work between Malta and Sicily.Over the coming weeks, the vessel will be responsible for laying more than 100 kilometres of subsea interconnector cable, helping bring the ambitious energy project one step closer to reality. The second Malta-Sicily interconnector is expected to strengthen the islands’ energy infrastructure, improve security of supply and support Malta’s long-term energy transition goals. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Environment and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli described the arrival of the Nexans Electra as a significant step forward for the project.“This is a massive step in making the new interconnector a reality,” Dalli said, noting that works are now actively underway. The vessel’s deployment follows months of preparation, including extensive offshore surveys and clearance operations along the route between Malta and Sicily.Once completed, the new interconnector will provide an additional electricity link between Malta and mainland Europe, increasing resilience and capacity within the national grid. For now, all eyes are on the Nexans Electra as it prepares to begin one of the most important phases of the project.Video credits to @miriamdalli•
