A commercial vessel has been reported to authorities after allegedly blasting loud music while anchored within a protected marine zone near St Paul’s Island. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)According to the Malta Sea Ranger Unit, the vessel was anchored within a LIFE Garnija protection area, which has been designated to safeguard nesting Yelkouan Shearwaters, a protected seabird species. The rules within these zones are clear: only compulsory vessel lights may be used and music is prohibited to minimise disturbance to wildlife and ensure maritime safety. The Sea Ranger Unit said several skippers in the area attempted to contact the vessel via VHF radio and mobile phone but received no response.“The music was too loud for the captain to hear,” the organisation said.Rangers first alerted Transport Malta, which they said was unable to intervene immediately due to a lack of resources at the time. They then contacted the Armed Forces of Malta control room for assistance. The vessel was eventually reached over VHF radio and subsequently left the area. The Sea Ranger Unit said the incident highlights a recurring issue involving commercial vessels failing to observe regulations in protected marine areas. It also stressed that loud music aboard commercial vessels is not only prohibited in these zones but can prevent captains from hearing important radio communications, creating potential safety risks. The organisation thanked both Transport Malta and the Armed Forces of Malta for recognising the importance of the case and assisting with the situation. The Sea Ranger Unit said it will be filing a report so that the matter can be investigated further.Should penalties be increased for vessels that breach environmental protection rules?Video: Malta Sea Rangers Unit•
