Opposition Leader Alex Borg has called for a magisterial inquiry into recent controversies at the Corradino Correctional Facility, arguing that an internal investigation alone is not enough.Speaking during an interview on NET Television, Borg said he was shocked by reports that confidential conversations between lawyers and their clients may have been monitored or recorded inside the prison. He also referred to the recent discovery of an internet-connected laptop in the cell of convicted murderer Adrian Agius, known as Ta’ Maksar.“We believe there shouldn’t just be an internal inquiry. There should also be a magisterial inquiry,” Borg said. The PN leader argued that a wider investigation is needed to establish the facts, identify any shortcomings and restore public trust in the correctional system. His comments come after prison authorities launched an internal inquiry into the laptop case, while the Chamber of Advocates filed a judicial protest over the alleged surveillance of privileged lawyer-client communications.Court lawyers in Malta and Gozo are also expected to strike on Monday in protest.Borg made the remarks a day after the opening of Parliament, where he also outlined a number of priorities for the new legislature. The PN leader called for greater accountability in Parliament, including weekly Prime Minister’s Questions, and said he would soon announce the party’s Shadow Cabinet. He also argued that Parliament should become more accessible and family-friendly, suggesting the introduction of childcare facilities for MPs.Borg said the Opposition would remain constructive but firm, supporting measures that benefit the country while continuing to hold the Government to account.Do you think an internal inquiry is enough?•
