A large crucifix remained completely intact and standing tall after a powerful tornado ripped through Merrillville, Indiana, causing widespread destruction at Catholic Andrean High School.Drone footage widely shared online shows the Catholic school’s campus littered with debris, with roofs torn off buildings and trees uprooted.Yet the prominent crucifix in front of the school survived untouched.WATCH:Crucifix remains standing after a storm ripped through Chicagoland in Indiana.Drone footage captured the wreckage with the crucifix standing tall in the middle.Awesome. pic.twitter.com/T65AF90zFr— Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) June 16, 2026A storm hit northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area last Thursday night, bringing a tornado that caused significant damage across Merrillville.School officials and witnesses described the scene at the school as devastating.Andrean High School President Jaykob Knazur told reporters that nearly every part of the campus suffered damage, except for the crucifix and the grotto on the north side of the building.“Heartbreaking,” Knazur told IndyStar of the extensive damage to the school. “Devastating.”“Nearly every tree on campus was uprooted or damaged,” Knazur added.IndieStar reports:Andrean put out a statement earlier Friday that read:“While we don’t know the full-scale impact quite yet, we do know that the grounds are not suitable for visitors or concerned friends. There are active power lines, downed trees, broken glass, significant roof damage, etc., that make it unsafe. While we assess the damage, mitigate safety risk, and determine next steps, we ask that you please stay away from campus until we provide an update. Andrean is a special and sacred place for so many of us. The damage incurred by this storm is devastating and hits us in a very personal way.
