ScreenshotThune is HOPELESS. He needs to GO. We’ve WASTED our Republican trifecta with this spineless sellout at the helm of the Senate.Senate Majority Leader John Thune appeared on Fox News with Bret Baier and once again proved he is the weak-kneed RINO who is single-handedly destroying the Republican trifecta and blocking President Trump’s top priority, the SAVE America Act.With Republicans holding the White House, the House, and the Senate, Thune still refuses to deliver voter ID, proof of citizenship to register to vote, a ban on biological males in girls’ sports, an end to mass mail-in voting, and protection for minors from transgender surgeries.Trump has demanded the full SAVE America Act be firmly attached to the FISA reauthorization. Thune’s response? It would “tank” FISA. He’d rather protect the surveillance state than secure our elections. Here’s the exchange:Bret Baier:Now the president is putting another stipulation. He wants his SAVE America Act, which is a voter ID bill, although it has other provisions in it, to be attached to FISA. He had a Truth Social post saying that the few Democrats — his word — are against FISA, with or without Bill Pulte going to DNI as acting director.“What kind of deal is that? Besides, I’m against FISA if it doesn’t come with the SAVE America Act, full version, firmly attached to it.”What do you say to the president on that?Thune:Well, we’ve had the vote on the full version twice now. The full version has five components: photo ID, proof of citizenship in order to register to vote, no biological boys in girls’ sports, a ban on mail-in voting, and doing away with transgender surgeries for minors — all things that I’m for, and a lot of us are. But that only got—Bret Baier:And those five things are fairly popular in the Republican caucus.Thune:They are. I mean, those are things that — but we only got 48 votes. We had that vote last week on all five components. The only way you can get this done, obviously, is to nuke the legislative filibuster, and that is not something that we have anywhere close to the votes to do.So we’ve had votes. We had it on the floor. It was the pending business in the Senate for a couple of weeks. We’ve done everything we can to date. We’ll continue to put the Democrats on the record. They are voting against an issue that 80 to 85 percent of the American people support, and we need to hold them accountable for that.Bret Baier:But the president doesn’t seem to understand your math.Thune:Yeah, and I get that. He’s very passionate.Bret Baier:In conversations with him, how does this go over? Because the way he types it in his Truth Social posts, it’s pretty aggressive. He thinks you should be doing more.Thune:And he’s passionate about it, and we are doing everything that we can. But it is a function of math. We are bound by arithmetic in the United States Senate. The votes currently aren’t there. We will continue to put the Democrats on the record and insist on votes on this. But if you tried to attach it, for example, to FISA, it would tank FISA. So, once we get Clayton done, we’ll move to FISA and try to get the Democrat coalition back together so we can actually pass that and put it on the president’s desk.We will also continue looking for additional opportunities to get votes on the SAVE Act.Bret Baier:What about housing? You’ve got a deal — potentially a bipartisan, bicameral bill on housing. And there are going to be people, including the president probably, who say, “Put SAVE America on that.”Thune:Well, I think he has said that. I don’t think there’s a bill that’s come in front of us that he hasn’t said that about. The housing bill was carefully negotiated — what we call “four corners” — bipartisan and bicameral, with Democrats and Republicans in both the House and the Senate. It is an issue that directly gets at the heart of the affordability question for a lot of Americans. It creates additional housing supply in this country and makes housing more affordable. So I’m hoping that’s something, too, that we can complete, get on the president’s desk, get signed into law, and that he will do that without making additional demands, as he has on some of these other bills.Bret Baier:How much do you think it hurts with the MAGA base as you head into November that you can’t get that done — the SAVE America Act?Thune:Well, again, I think it’s a pure function of math, and I’m sympathetic to it. I’m for it. I voted for all of that stuff. Most of my Republican colleagues in the Senate are, too.But we haven’t gotten a single Democrat vote. The Democrats have voted as a bloc against it. That’s where I think you make this a campaign issue and go after Democrats.I don’t think it’s helpful to go after Republicans and try to get us to do something when people now know we don’t have the votes to do it. We’ve demonstrated that. We’ve had five votes on this.WATCH: JUST NOW: John Thune goes on TV making VERY clear he’s TOO WEAK to get the SAVE America Act passedThune is HOPELESS. He needs to go.
