Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago is being held at Kira Police Division headquarters in Kira Municipality, Wakiso district.Earlier reports had indicated that Lukwago was being detained at Kira Road Police Division. Lawyers led by Medard Lubega Ssegona rushed there to establish his whereabouts but were informed that he had been transferred to Kira Police Division in Wakiso. The legal team subsequently proceeded to Kira Police Division, where only one lawyer was allowed access to the suspect. Family members and journalists were denied entry to the station, which was under heavy security deployment.Doreen Nyanjura, the former Kampala Capital City Authority deputy lord mayor, said police officers informed them that only Lukwago’s lawyer would be allowed inside while he recorded a statement.“I told them I wanted to go inside and see my boss, but the officers told me only one person was allowed inside. They said they would allow the family and us at around 1 pm to see him,” Nyanjura told URN.By Tuesday afternoon, it remained unclear whether Lukwago would be produced in court after recording his statement or remain in police custody. Lukwago was reportedly arrested on Monday by security operatives dressed in UPDF uniforms who arrived in minibuses commonly referred to as “drones”.According to residents of Wakaliga, a Kampala suburb where Lukwago resides, the operatives cordoned off roads leading to his home as early as 5:00 a.m. and searched vehicles entering the area. His arrest came as he was reportedly preparing to serve court summons on Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in relation to a High Court petition filed by Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale over alleged threats made on social media.Lawyers and family members allege that operatives attached to the Special Forces Command (SFC) surrounded the residence, scaled the perimeter fence and took Lukwago into custody without presenting an arrest warrant. His legal team, led by Ssegona, and family members, including his wife Nalongo Zzawedde, have condemned the operation as unlawful and degrading. Since Monday, relatives and lawyers from Lukwago & Co Advocates say they have moved between several police stations searching for his whereabouts, without success, as police and military authorities remained silent on the matter.Although no official statement has been issued regarding the arrest, Muhoozi has continued to post on X, formerly Twitter, commenting on Lukwago’s detention. In one of the posts, he claimed that Lukwago was being held in a basement.Muhoozi also shared photographs of Lukwago while in detention, prompting criticism from several individuals and organisations, including the Uganda Law Society. The post Lukwago transferred to Kira Police Division as lawyers, family seek access appeared first on The Observer Media Ltd.
