A 27-year-old woman has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after terrorising, stealing from and assaulting her own mother in a series of drug-fuelled incidents.Jade Russell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including harassment, threats, theft and causing slight bodily harm. The court heard that Russell repeatedly targeted her mother for money to fund a severe cocaine addiction and buy food. The case came to a head on 11th June when police in Birżebbuġa received an urgent report from Russell’s mother.Prosecutors explained that Russell’s behaviour became increasingly volatile after she abruptly left a drug rehabilitation programme. Despite being evicted from the family home because of her aggressive conduct, she continued entering the property without permission and often brought strangers inside. The abuse escalated when Russell grabbed her mother by the neck and threatened to kill her.Her mother also reported that large sums of cash had gone missing from the home, with Russell later admitting to stealing the money during police questioning.Appearing before Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace, Russell entered an early guilty plea to all charges. The court sentenced her to 18 months’ imprisonment, imposed a €200 fine and placed her under a two-year treatment order aimed at supporting her rehabilitation.A three-year restraining order was also issued to protect her mother. The prosecution was led by Inspector Christian Cauchi, while legal aid lawyer Martina Herrera represented the accused. What do you make of this?•
