The Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation has expressed its disappointment after revealing that, almost nine years after the incident that left its founder permanently disabled, a date has still not been set for the jury proceedings in his case.In a statement, the foundation said it was “hurt and disappointed” to learn that no jury date has yet been indicated for the case involving former police officer Simon Schembri.Schembri suffered life-changing injuries while carrying out his duties in 2017, after he was dragged by a vehicle during a traffic stop. The incident left him with severe disabilities and dependent on others for the rest of his life. The foundation said it had largely refrained from commenting publicly on the case over the years in order to allow the course of justice to take place. However, it argued that the delay has now become unacceptable.“Justice for Simon and his family is not being done and cannot be done,” the statement read. The foundation called on the relevant authorities to take action as soon as possible, while also highlighting the wider impact that lengthy criminal proceedings can have on victims and their families.Do you think criminal cases in Malta take too long to conclude?Image: Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation•
