Rangers have asked Hearts for permission to speak to boss Derek McInnes, talkSPORT understands.Current manager Danny Rohl is close to leaving Rangers for Red Bull Salzburg.Rohl has only been with Rangers for seven monthsGettyRohl does not have a release clause in his Ibrox contract so the two clubs need to agree a compensation package. The German, who was appointed last October, has a contract until 2028.Salzburg are looking for a new manager following the departure of Daniel Beichler.Beichler was axed after he led Salzburg to third in the Austrian Bundesliga, which secured them a berth in the qualifying rounds for next season’s Europa League. And Rangers are moving quickly to bring in Rohl’s replacement – with the club looking close to home.McInnes is the club’s number one target following Hearts’ impressive 2025/26 season.Having led the Scottish Premiership for most of the campaign, they ended up in second spot after losing away at Celtic on the final day.It would be a return to Ibrox for McInnes if he takes the job – a role he rejected in 2017 – having spent five years at the club between 1995-2000.McInnes only joined Hearts in May 2025 – winning 28 and losing seven of his 45 matches in charge across all competitions.Rangers have already raided Hearts once this summer having snapped up Scotland international Lawrence Shankland.Rangers have identified McInnes as their top target to replace RohlGettyShankland, who had been Hearts’ skipper, scored 88 goals in 171 games for the club between 2022-2026.Red Bull gives you wings… and jobsRed Bull’s football operations are led by Rohl’s compatriot and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.Rohl is also no stranger to the Red Bull set-up having began his coaching career with RB Leipzig under Ralph Hassenhuttl, whom he followed to Southampton.Should Rohl be appointed as Salzburg’s new boss, it would be his third managerial role having previously led Sheffield Wednesday. The 37-year-old moved to Rangers after Russell Martin was sacked in October following a run of just five wins in 17 games.Rohl had initially turned down Rangers’ approach but had a change of heart after the Scottish giants’ talks with Kevin Muscat broke down.Rohl ended the 2025/26 season without leading Rangers to any form of silverwareGettyHow has Rohl performed with Rangers? He took over with Rangers sitting sixth in the Scottish Premiership and helped them recover to be well in the title race alongside Celtic and Hearts. However, four defeats in their last five fixtures killed off any hope Rangers had of winning the league as Celtic emerged as winners on a dramatic final day of the season.Adding to Rohl and Rangers’ misery was the fact they were dumped out of the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup by Celtic.Rohl also oversaw a meek effort in the Europa League as Rangers finished the league phase in 32nd, meaning they did not qualify for the knockout play-offs.In total, Rohl won 22, drew seven and lost 11 of his 40 games in charge of Rangers last term.Despite the frustrating campaign across all competitions, Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh backed Rohl to get things right for next season.Rangers have now gone two seasons without silverwareGetty“Danny is our coach, we think that Danny gives us the best opportunity to win the league next year,” Cavenagh said.“We think there are two really important things that he needs, one is a pre-season and the most important one is a revamped squad.“I don’t love the word backed, I would say that we recognise that the squad needs significant change, so we intend to do that.“Where it needs changed it is less around the talent, we have good talented players, what we need to do is look at chemistry, mentality and leadership.“It is more those nuanced and intangible things that we really are focusing on this summer with the squad.”
