Department of Labor (Credit: Ed Brown)The Trump administration is once again taking aim at government waste, fraud, and abuse, this time warning all 50 states that federal funding for unemployment insurance administration could be on the chopping block if governors fail to crack down on rampant fraud within their systems.Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling has sent formal letters on Wednesday to the governors of all 50 states and U.S. territories, warning that states that fail to aggressively combat fraud risk losing their federal administrative funding for the first time in American history.“We are officially putting governors on notice,” said Acting Secretary Sonderling. “The American people will no longer tolerate the blatant waste, fraud, and abuse of their hard-earned tax dollars — no state should allow it either. If states allow it, they will suffer the consequences. This department is no longer afraid to use every lever available to ensure taxpayer money is protected.”Inspector General Anthony D’Esposito added, “The days of excuses are over. States that fail to protect taxpayer dollars should expect consequences. Acting Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling and I will use every available enforcement tool to demand accountability, recover stolen money, and ensure unemployment benefits only go to eligible Americans.”The Department of Labor (DOL) made it crystal clear: use “every available tool,” including withholding administrative funds, to force states to clean up their act. Without those federal dollars, state unemployment systems could literally shut down, grinding benefits to a halt for everyone. The move is part of President Donald Trump’s broader government-wide effort to root out fraud and restore accountability throughout federally funded programs. Earlier this year, President Trump established a federal anti-fraud task force led by Vice President JD Vance to investigate misuse of taxpayer dollars across a range of government programs. The administration argues that outdated technology, weak identity verification systems, and years of bureaucratic neglect have left unemployment programs vulnerable to abuse. Federal officials say states that fail to modernize their systems and implement stronger fraud prevention measures could face escalating enforcement actions. Not surprisingly, some Democrat-controlled states immediately pushed back against the warning, accusing the administration of politicizing the issue.According to DOL:California – More than $20 billion in debt to the federal government after years of fraud, improper payments, and mismanagement of its UI system.New York – Losing an estimated $2 million every day to fraud and improper payments, while posting one of the highest improper payment rates in the nation, exceeding 20%.Illinois – Improperly paying out more than $320 million in taxpayer funds at a rate of more than 14%, one of the highest improper payment rates in the nation. As The Gateway Pundit has been reporting for over a year, the unemployment insurance system became a massive fraud magnet under lax oversight and expanded Biden-era programs.Previous DOGE investigations uncovered hundreds of millions in fraudulent claims. An initial survey of Unemployment Insurance claims since 2020 revealed the following:– 24.5k people over 115 years old claimed $59M in benefits– 28k people between 1 and 5 years old claimed $254M in benefits– 9.7k people with birth dates over 15 years in the future claimed…— Department of Government Efficiency (@DOGE) April 10, 2025The Trump administration already sent strike teams into high-fraud states like California to investigate financial issues and potential fraud in their unemployment systems. The message from President Trump’s Labor Department is unmistakable: Fix it or lose the funding. This is how you restore integrity to government programs. This is how you put American taxpayers first. The post Trump Administration Puts ALL 50 States and Territories on Notice: Clean Up Unemployment Fraud or Risk Losing Federal Funding appeared first on The Gateway Pundit.
