Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has never won the GIII Ohio Derby at Thistledown, but that might change when the speedy Desert Gate (Omaha Beach) runs on Saturday. The 3-year-old colt owned by the 'Three Amigos'–Michael Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman–has enviable speed out of the gate.If the Baffert trainee can get the distance of nine furlongs, which would be a first, then the Ohio Derby could well be his.Last out in the Texas Derby at Lone Star May 25, Desert Gate made quick work of five others and won by 6 1/4 lengths.Standing in the 5-2 morning line favorite's way are several horses with resumes that lend confidence.Chief among the rivals are two colts by Connect in Ocelli, who finished third in the GI Kentucky Derby, and Chip Honcho, who hit the board in the GI Preakness Stakes.Steve Asmussen trainee Chip Honcho has the ability to be forwardly placed and that could make him a tough customer as the field turns for home.Headed to the post is the third-place finisher in the GIII Peter Pan Stakes at Aqueduct last month, Trendsetter (Modernist). The 3-year-old won the GIII Stonestreet Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in April for trainer Ben Colebrook. After being well-beaten in the Derby, Albus (Yaupon) returns to the races for Pin Oak Stud and trainer Riley Mott. The winner of the final GII Wood Memorial Stakes at the Big A should be rested and ready.Chad Allan (Union Rags), who Katie Petrunyak featured in this edition of the TDN, was the runner-up in the Bath House Row Stakes at Oaklawn Apr. 18 and last out ran second to Texas Derby winner Desert Gate. Also drawn for the Ohio Derby is GSP Robusta (Accelerate), Zihnal (Quality Road), SW Bull by the Horns (Essential Quality) and Canadian SW Jupiter (Upstart). Deep Dish In The Chicago Stakes At ChurchillIn the GII Chicago Stakes at Churchill Downs, Eclatant (Into Mischief) will probably serve as the favorite come post time. That is deserved after the 4-year-old netted the GI Resolute Racing Madison Stakes at Keeneland Apr. 4. A five-time winner, the talented filly is trained by Brad Cox.Eclatant's recent exploits will not deter the rest of this field from taking her on though.Usha takes the Winning Colors | Coady MediaLook for Usha (Tiz the Law), who also carries the colors of the 'Three Amigos,' to be up to the challenge. The Bob Baffert trainee shipped to Louisville for the GI Derby City Distaff Stakes May 2 and finished third.Usha's conditioner kept the sprinter at Churchill and the move paid off when she won by a neck in the GIII Winning Colors Stakes May 25. The second and third place runners from that race are back, and both GSW Zeitlos (Curlin) and MSW Foie Gras (Volatile) are itching to get their picture taken.Evanescence (Munnings), who is graded stakes placed for trainer Eddie Kenneally, put in a winning performance against optional claimers at Keeneland Apr. 22. Beauty Reigns (Into Mischief) ran third in the GI Test Stakes at the Spa last year. The Bill Mott trainee cleared her own optional claimer at Churchill May 17.Also seeking their fortune in the Chicago Stakes are stakes winners Lotsandlotsofcandy (Twirling Candy) and Queen's Martini (Mucho Macho Man). The post Lucky Day! ‘Three Amigos’ Look To Corral Graded Saturday appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
