Royal Ascot gets underway on Tuesday, launching five days of world-class Flat racing at the iconic Berkshire track. Fans can look forward to a spectacular seven-race card packed with quality and prestige. The opening day features three highly anticipated Group 1 contests, showcasing the finest international thoroughbreds, as well as a Group 2 and some ultra competitive handicaps. Our expert, Colm Doyle, has a trio of selections on the card including one in the opening Queen Anne Stakes, one in the Coventry Stakes and one in the Ascot Stakes.GET £30 IN FREE BETS WITH TALKSPORT BETRoyal Ascot betting tips Tuesday2.30 Royal Ascot – Zeus Olympios @ 9/1 3.05 Royal Ascot – Great Barrier Reef @ 11/2 5.00 Royal Ascot – Reaching High @ 9/4 2.30 Royal Ascot –Zeus Olympios There’s little doubt that Charlie Appleby’s Notable Speech will be tough to beat if replicating his Lockinge form, but he’s not been at his best in his two previous visits to Royal Ascot and looks worth taking on, particularly at the current prices. More Thunder finished two lengths behind Notable Speech on his reappearance at Newbury, but this track should suit William Haggas’ charge and there’s reason to believe he can reverse that form. However, I’m leaning towards Karl Burke’s Zeus Olympios, who was only three-quarters of a length further back in third and looks to be nearing a return to the sort of form that saw him win each of his four starts last year and readily defeat the re-opposing Opera Ballo in the Group 2 Joel Stakes on good to firm ground in September. He’s as big as 9-1 and represents excellent each-way value. 3.05 Royal Ascot – Great Barrier ReefAidan O’Brien has won the Group 2 Coventry Stakes no fewer than 11 times previously and he holds another strong hand this time around courtesy of Confucius and Great Barrier Reef. Ryan Moore, who has partnered five of those winners, has opted to partner Confucius, but there’s very little to choose between the pair on form and he may well have picked the wrong one, as has been the case in a couple of high profile races already this season. Great Barrier Reef is unbeaten in two outings and brings the best form into the race, having run to a Racing Post Rating of 101 when winning the Group 3 Kilcrea Castle Marble Hill Stakes at the Curragh last month. He’s unproven on faster than good, but he’s a brother to Mystery Power, who landed the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket as a juvenile on ground officially described as good to firm. 5.00 Royal Ascot – Reaching HighWillie Mullins’ Reaching High was a beaten favourite for this race last year, but he found plenty of traffic problems in the straight on that occasion and is fancied to bounce back and provide a memorable success for the King and the Queen. The five-year-old has been off since finishing ninth of 20 behind Ascending 12 months ago, but his master handler knows exactly what it takes to ready one for this meeting, having saddled 11 Royal Ascot winners to date. The selection was only beaten three-and-a-half lengths a year ago and finished full of running, having repeatedly been denied a clear run from 3f out and again when in the process of making eye-catching progress midway inside the final furlong. He runs off the same mark of 94 and will surely take plenty of beating.
