Two tourists visiting Malta captured a rare wildlife encounter while hiking near San Blas Bay in Gozo, filming what appears to be two snakes interlocked.Des and Pam de Jager, who were visiting from Yzerfontein in South Africa, said they came across the scene during a hike on Friday and shared the footage after wondering what species they had encountered. The video shows two dark-coloured snakes twisting around one another on a trail overlooking the bay, a behaviour commonly associated with male snakes competing during the breeding season. While species identification from video alone is not definitive, the snakes appear consistent with Malta’s non-venomous whip snakes, which are among the most commonly sighted snakes on the islands. The couple said they visit Malta every year to spend time with their son and were excited to witness such an unusual moment in the wild. The sighting occurred near San Blas Bay, one of Gozo’s most scenic coastal areas, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s native wildlife.Have you ever spotted snakes in Malta or Gozo?
