Ecuadorian fans deliver, but La Tri falls short in loss to Ivory Coast

Wait 5 sec.

PHILADELPHIA — The sea of yellow at Lincoln Financial Field, and the raucous anthem rendition it delivered was what you would come to expect from Brazil at a World Cup. But no, it was Ecuador’s fans delivering a very inspired start to their World Cup.PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – JUNE 14: Fans of Ecuador enjoy the atmosphere during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E match between Cote D’Ivoire and Ecuador at Philadelphia Stadium on June 14, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That’s what happened to Ecuador on a night when it outplayed Ivory Coast for stretches but failed to cash in.Two shots off the woodwork was all Ecuador had to show for its attacking promise, and the Ivorians made La Tri pay when Amad Diallo’s late winner helped Les Elephants snatch all three points in a result that all but ensures Ivory Coast a place in the knockout rounds given the automatic three points that await later in the group stage against Curacao. You couldn’t have blamed either team for playing for the draw as the second half went on, but Ivory Coast secured the reward for continuing to chase the win as Ecuador gradually collapsed into its normally resolute defensive shell. All the pre-tournament talk about Ecuador potentially having the stingiest defense in the world felt a bit unwarranted as Yan Diomande dazzled on the wing, but the William Pacho-led backline did hold up well for the majority of the night, paying the price for the late lapse that allowed Amad Diallo to slip between a retreating Piero Hincapie and Moises Caiecedo to convert Wilfried Singo’s pin-point pass. Now the pressure falls squarely on Ecuador, which can take little solace from the fact three points feel safe to assume in the next group match against Curacao. Now La Tri must find a way to earn a result against mighty Germany in the group finale to ensure a place in the knockout rounds.Thinking that far ahead won’t matter much though if Ecuador can’t resolve the issue that it was expected to deal with heading into the tournament, a lackluster attack that falls well short of the level of its top-notch defense. Without more from the offense, Ecuador is facing the prospect of leaving this World Cup with very few memorable moments on the field to match the high caliber displays the Ecuadorian fans are sure to deliver.
