NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 19 — The National Police Service has launched a manhunt for Kuresoi North Member of Parliament Alfred Mutai following violent clashes at a political event in Kuresoi Sub-County, Nakuru County, that left several people nursing gunshot injuries.In a statement issued Friday, the police identified Mutai as the prime suspect in the chaos that erupted during a Youth Empowerment Meeting at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds attended by several political leaders, including Susan Kihika.“The Service is pursuing the prime suspect, Hon. Alfred Mutai, who is currently on the run. Police officers have launched a manhunt to apprehend him and other persons connected to the incident,” Police Spoesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated. Nyaga urged the legislator to surrender to the nearest police station to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.“Preliminary investigations indicate that the confrontation involved suspected goons allegedly allied to the MP and supporters of Governor Kihika. Several people sustained gunshot injuries during the violence and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment,” he stated.He also reported that a bus transporting tents and chairs to the venue was torched during the disturbance by unknown individuals.He condemned what it described as rising cases of political intolerance, violence and goonism across the country, warning that those involved in sponsoring chaos or inciting supporters would face firm legal action.“The National Police Service reiterates: no person, regardless of social status, political affiliation, or public office, is above the law,” he stated.He warned individuals against engaging in acts of violence, sponsoring criminal gangs or disrupting lawful gatherings, saying anyone found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
