Jurgen Pisani has been cleared of match-fixing charges after the Court of Appeal overturned a 15-month prison sentence handed down earlier this year.According to a report by Newsbook, Pisani, who currently plays for Żabbar St Patrick FC and captained Santa Lucia FC during the 2023/24 season, had been found guilty of attempting to influence a Premier League match in May 2024.The case centred on allegations that Pisani offered €2,000 to Brazilian striker Maxuell Maia of Birkirkara FC in exchange for not scoring during a match. However, in his appeal judgment, Judge Neville Camilleri ruled that the evidence presented did not meet the legal threshold required for a criminal conviction. The court noted that Pisani’s version of events remained consistent throughout proceedings and found no evidence that deleted WhatsApp messages were removed in an attempt to conceal a crime. The judgment also highlighted concerns raised by the defence regarding inconsistencies in witness testimony and the prosecution’s failure to present certain evidence, including footage of the match in question. As a result, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction and acquitted Pisani of all charges. The appeal was decided by Judge Neville Camilleri. Pisani was represented by lawyers Edward Gatt, Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit.Do you agree with the court’s decision?•
