Construction activity is picking up speed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.Credit: Patrick McGarvey, FlickrRecent documents filed by Walt Disney Imagineering indicated that work was advancing in the area formerly occupied by Muppets Courtyard, a section of the park that has undergone dramatic changes over the past year. While Disney has remained selective about revealing specific details, these permits provide another glimpse into what guests can expect when the Monsters, Inc.-inspired land eventually opens. The filings identified two addresses at the center of the project: 359 Cypress Drive and 361 Cypress Drive. Those locations corresponded to the former sites of Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano and the Stage 1 Company Store, both of which sat within the now-closed Muppets Courtyard area.Credit: DisneyAccording to the permits, Adirondack Scenic, Inc. has been contracted to install “set elements” at the locations. The company is well known throughout the themed entertainment industry for creating highly detailed environments and show scenery. Because the permit remains active for a full year, it suggests that substantial themed construction could continue throughout the coming months.New Updates Have Been SharedRecent aerial photographs shared by X user bioreconstruct also show just how much activity is underway throughout the future Monstropolis site. Images reveal extensive demolition work within the former Muppets Courtyard footprint, with construction crews continuing to clear and reshape the area, and track pieces beginning to be lifted. In a very distant photo today it seems like the first section of track is being raised at the Monsters Inc roller coaster. In aerial photo yesterday, possibly the same track staged on ground. Additional photos highlight ongoing site preparation work and expanding construction zones that continue to spread across the project area, demonstrating the scale of Disney’s redevelopment effort.Aerial photo of construction at the entrance to Monstropolis. Unlike several neighboring structures that have already been removed, the restaurant is being repurposed rather than demolished. Disney previously confirmed that the building will become Harryhausen’s, the famous restaurant featured in Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. (2001).The Stage 1 Company Store has not been as fortunate. The retail location was demolished in July 2025, making way for new construction. Its removal signals that Disney is doing far more than applying a new theme to existing spaces. Instead, the company is carrying out a major redevelopment that combines new construction with selective reuse of existing buildings.Credit: DisneyTaken together, the permits and visible construction progress reinforce Disney’s ambition for the new land. What is emerging appears to be a fully realized Monstropolis environment. Combined with the roller coaster already rising behind construction walls, the expansion will add another major attraction to Walt Disney World’s lineup. When the project was first announced during D23 2024, Disney shared additional details about the land’s story.“Picking up after the events of Pixar’s beloved film, humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc.–and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly. But it’s not a true visit without the factory itself,” Disney wrote after its D23 2024 announcement. “You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs, and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (AKA Sulley) and Mike Wazowski–via a door!”Credit: DisneyAlthough Disney has not yet revealed the complete attraction lineup, every new permit and photo continues to fill in pieces of the puzzle. The Monsters, Inc. project was officially confirmed nearly two years ago and remains one of several large-scale developments currently underway across Walt Disney World Resort. At Magic Kingdom, Disney announced what it described as the largest expansion in the park’s history. That project includes the creation of Piston Peak National Park in Frontierland as well as a long-awaited Disney Villains-themed area beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.Meanwhile, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is undergoing its own transformation. The former DinoLand U.S.A. is being reimagined as Pueblo Esperanza, a Tropical Americas-themed land anchored by an Encanto attraction and a new Indiana Jones adventure that will take over the current DINOSAUR ride location.Credit: DisneyWith construction crews active across multiple parks, Walt Disney World is entering one of its most significant periods of change in recent memory. At Hollywood Studios, the latest permits make it increasingly clear that Monstropolis is moving beyond the planning stage and becoming a physical reality, bringing Pixar’s monster-filled city one step closer to welcoming guests. How do you feel about the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land?
