Moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake at unknown depth14 Jun 15:38 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 4 minutes.14 Jun 15:45: Now using data updates from GFZUpdate Sun, 14 Jun 2026, 15:45Moderate 4.9 quake hits near Sipalay, Negros Occidental, Western Visayas, PhilippinesAn earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred late at night on Sunday, June 14th, 2026, at 11:34 pm local time near Sipalay, Negros Occidental, Western Visayas, Philippines, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Magdalena (pop. 2,400) located 49 km from the epicenter, Belison (pop. 14,400) 86 km away, Miagao (pop. 8,900) 87 km away, Inayauan (pop. 10,000) 92 km away, and Sipalay (pop. 73,800) 95 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Iloilo City (pop. 473,700) located 119 km from the epicenter.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.Update Sun, 14 Jun 2026, 15:40Seismic-like event, possible earthquake, reported few minutes ago near Iloilo City, Western Visayas, PhilippinesUnconfirmed quake or seismic-like event reported: Near Iloilo City, Western Visayas, Philippines, 5 minutes agoWe are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Iloilo City, Western Visayas, Philippines on 14 Jun 2026 (GMT) at approximately 15:35 GMT.There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)II: Very weak shaking2157–193 km (98–120 mi)175 km (109 mi)III: Weak shaking380–204 km (50–127 mi)134 km (83 mi)IV: Light shaking2123–206 km (76–128 mi)164 km (102 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (7 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 8 km2 (3 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 5 km (3 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Jun 14, 2026 11:34 pm (GMT +8)13 minutes ago - felt4.910 km0 km - This quakeSulu Sea, Western Visayas, 75 km NE of Cagayan Island, PhilippinesMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 56 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 196 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.06 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 18.2 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 0.64 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.6 years)Mag. 4 or higher: 7.5 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 40 quakes per year (or 3.4 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 172 quakes per year (or 14.4 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 196 quakes per year (or 16.4 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity.
