Former PN MEP candidate Lee Bugeja Bartolo has renewed his call for mandatory pool safety barriers following yesterday’s incident in Marsaxlokk, where a four-year-old boy was left in serious condition after falling into a pool.In a Facebook post shared after news of the incident emerged, Bugeja Bartolo once again urged authorities to introduce legal requirements for pool barriers in Malta.“As many of you recall, last year we witnessed two tragic drownings of young children in pools,” he wrote.Bugeja Bartolo said he had already pushed for mandatory pool barriers following the death of six-year-old Zaylen Borg in 2025 but claimed his calls “fell on deaf ears”.“Today another incident has taken place,” he wrote. “How many drownings do we need to witness to take this issue seriously?”He is now proposing that any future legislation introducing mandatory pool barriers be named “Zaylen’s Law”, after receiving the approval of the Borg family. The proposal would require safety barriers to be installed in all new pool constructions by law.Should Malta make pool safety barriers mandatory?•
