I don't know about your part of the world, but in mine, Legal Aid takes on less than 5% of the family law cases presented to them, so mom's story and circumstances must have been extremely compelling to their committee. I'm not above giving a crazy high retainer number when I'm told that a severely handicapped 7 year old has been in the hospital for almost a month because he was starving to death, and the parent is the innocent victim of a spiteful DFACS worker and just wants his kid back, so maybe someone out there did what I do and told this guy the retainer is $30,000 or more because they were as disturbed as I've been on occasion.
