Confirmed: ‘Star Wars’ Retconning Grogu After ‘Mandalorian’ Cancellation

Jon Favreau has issued some confusing new information about Grogu, AKA Baby Yoda.Disney and Lucasfilm are currently deep into the promotional push for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise’s first theatrical Star Wars release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The film arrives May 22 and effectively replaces the axed fourth season of The Mandalorian.Credit: LucasfilmThat shift has not gone entirely smoothly. Early box office tracking has suggested the movie could open below Solo: A Star Wars Story, a worrying sign for a franchise Disney has spent years trying to stabilize theatrically. The situation has also reignited debate around the so-called “Mandoverse.” Jon Favreau previously confirmed that The Mandalorian Season 4 scripts had already been written before Lucasfilm pivoted toward a movie instead. Multiple reports have since suggested the future of the Mandoverse may now depend entirely on how the film performs.Favreau has additionally revealed that the original Season 4 would have connected heavily to Ahsoka Season 2 and Grand Admiral Thrawn’s larger storyline. The movie, meanwhile, was reportedly rebuilt into a more standalone adventure designed to appeal to broader audiences unfamiliar with the Disney+ shows.Credit: LucasfilmThat broader appeal appears to be driving much of Disney’s recent press strategy around a galaxy far, far away. Favreau has spent the past several weeks discussing everything from the scrapped Season 4 plans to Grogu’s future inside the Star Wars franchise. Now, he may have accidentally rewritten parts of Grogu’s story altogether.Jon Favreau Complicates Grogu’s Star Wars BackstorySpeaking to GamesRadar, Favreau suggested Grogu’s Jedi history may extend far beyond what audiences previously understood.“He’s not on the typical Jedi path of a youngling, but he has trained with some of the best Jedi teachers that there are,” Favreau tells GamesRadar+. “We know for sure he’s studied with Luke Skywalker. There’s implications that he may have crossed paths with Yoda, because he does recognize the name, is what we imply. And he also was there at the Jedi Temple before Order 66.”Credit: LucasfilmFavreau also stressed that Grogu is continuing to develop his Force abilities despite no longer actively training under a Jedi Master.“So, it’s a big part in talking to Dave Filoni, and by extension, to what he learned from George [Lucas], which is that the Force is about training,” he continues. “It’s about refining, just like an athletic ability or any skill.”The bigger revelation, however, involves Grogu’s identity moving forward. Favreau repeatedly frames the character less as a Jedi and more as a Mandalorian apprentice under Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal, who will be unmasked for at least some of the movie).“Grogu is now a Mandalorian apprentice,” says Favreau. “He’s been tasked with that, for those people who had watched the show. If you hadn’t watched the show, what you need to know is that he is now going to be a Mandalorian in training.”That may sound straightforward, but it significantly muddies what Star Wars previously established about Grogu’s trajectory.Credit: LucasfilmSeason 2 of The Mandalorian positioned Grogu as a Force-sensitive child searching for Jedi guidance. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) ultimately took him away specifically to continue Jedi training. Season 3 then abruptly reversed course after Grogu returned to Din Djarin in The Book of Boba Fett, a creative decision many fans already viewed as a soft retcon.Favreau’s latest comments push that even further. Grogu is now seemingly being reframed as something entirely new — neither fully Jedi nor fully Mandalorian.Favreau even hinted that Grogu may eventually challenge traditional Mandalorian rules entirely.“And what’s interesting now is we have a character that’s going to be potentially both Jedi and Mandalorian in Grogu, and we’ll see what his path is.”Credit: LucasfilmThat idea directly clashes with older Star Wars lore, where attachment and divided loyalties were often treated as incompatible with Jedi teachings.Disney may have practical reasons for changing course. Grogu remains the franchise’s biggest merchandising success in years, and transforming him into a more action-oriented Mandalorian apprentice potentially broadens his long-term role beyond simply being “Baby Yoda.”It also conveniently distances the character from Luke Skywalker and the sequel trilogy timeline — an era Disney has repeatedly struggled to reconnect audiences with since The Rise of Skywalker. What are your predictions for The Mandalorian and Grogu? The post Confirmed: ‘Star Wars’ Retconning Grogu After ‘Mandalorian’ Cancellation appeared first on Inside the Magic.
