Momentum has unveiled a new set of proposals aimed at tackling Malta’s growing waste problem, including a ban on single-use plastic and a gradual phase-out of plastic packaging in supermarkets. The party argued that Malta continues generating some of the highest levels of waste per person in the EU while still relying heavily on landfills and incineration.Momentum said Malta should shift towards a system focused on prevention, recovery, reuse and recycling in line with the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. The proposals include investing in better waste sorting and processing infrastructure while reducing dependence on landfill sites and incinerators.Momentum also wants to work with producers, importers and retailers to gradually phase out plastic packaging in supermarkets through consultation and alternative solutions.Another proposal includes creating a national roadmap towards “zero plastic” with measurable targets and timelines linked to Malta’s wider decarbonisation plans.“Every year Malta sends thousands of tonnes of waste to landfill because no government has had the political will to build a proper system,” Momentum candidate Dr Alastair Farrugia said. The party argued that urgent action is needed as Malta continues falling behind other EU countries on waste management and environmental goals.Should Malta ban single use plastics?•
