Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat says anyone promising to “solve” Malta’s traffic problem with a magic wand is simply making things up.In a lengthy Facebook post about transport and mobility, Muscat argued that traffic is the direct result of economic activity and movement across the country.“During COVID we had practically the same amount of people in Malta, but the roads were empty because the economy had stopped,” he wrote.Muscat said the only measures that could drastically reduce traffic overnight would be introducing higher car licence fees and parking meters, measures he insisted Labour has always opposed because they would mostly hit workers and families with less flexibility in their daily lives. He also defended Labour’s infrastructure projects over the years, saying road upgrades were only the “first step” of a wider long-term transport plan. The former Prime Minister praised Labour’s recently announced mobility proposals, particularly the idea of mobility credits that people could use across buses, taxis and ferries depending on their needs.Muscat described sea transport linking different parts of Malta as “the core of everything”, saying the project should have started around 10 years ago before being delayed by court cases. He also said he is curious to learn more about Labour’s light rail proposal, calling it “far more realistic” than ideas mentioned in the past.At the same time, Muscat took aim at the PN’s proposed train system, claiming it would remove parking spaces and pass directly next to people’s homes unless routes go through ODZ land. What do you think Malta actually needs to reduce traffic?•
