Phil Foden handed World Cup warning after late bid for England spot

Wait 5 sec.

Phil Foden has been told that he’s left it too late to get into the England World Cup squad. That is the view of former Manchester City and Three Lions defender Danny Mills.Foden’s England career has never taken off, and it is expected he won’t be adding to his 49 caps this summerGettyThe attacking midfielder was handed a rare Premier League start by Pep Guardiola in the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace. He played 82 minutes and grabbed two assists for Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush. That made it five assists for the season for the 25-year-old, but he hasn’t scored since a burst of games in December in the top-flight.And with competition for a place very intense, Mills thinks it’s too little too late for Foden.Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast with Andy Goldstein and Gabby Agbonlahor, he was asked if Foden had left too much to do and said: “Yeah, a little bit too much too late, perhaps and also against a weakish Palace side.“Does that really tell you what sort of form that he’s in?“The England squad is going to be difficult because there are lots of unknowns.“There are lots of issues in the wide areas, with who is going to start and play, especially in that eight and ten role, who are going to be those players.“Unfortunately for Phil, his form throughout the season probably hasn’t been good enough to force his way into that England side.”On a wider point about the England squad, Goldstein asked Mills if there was still time to force a way into Thomas Tuchel‘s plans. He said: “No, I think he’d probably made his mind up three or four months ago with 20 of his squad.“It is very, very difficult at this late stage because he knows the players, and he has been with them enough.“He will have pencilled in what he believes is his squad, and he is probably waiting on injuries to see what happens in the last few games.“It is incredibly difficult to force your way in over the course of three or four games.”Not done enoughOf the 31 Premier League games Foden has featured in for Man City this year, he has scored in just five of them. And with the Citizens looking for a domestic treble, he has been reduced to a bench role.Foden is set to sign a new long-term deal at his boyhood clubGettyIt is why Adrian Durham called for the Englishman to forget about staying at the Etihad this summer and join Coventry City.On that, he said: “The next step isn’t signing a new contract at Manchester City for more of the same.“Rayan Cherki is there. He isn’t going to give up his place to you easily. There are wingers there who are better than you: Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku are not going to give up their places easily.“So, Phil Foden is a sub at best. So, I do not understand why he has signed a new contract.“What he should have done this summer, and maybe, this might actually happen – I might be proved wrong here, I doubt it, but he should have sought a move to Coventry. It’s unclear how many more players will be able to make a late push into Tuchel’s squadGetty“Now, he might still go on loan. But go to Coventry City, be an absolute star, rip it up, keep them in the Premier League or take them to unbelievable heights in their first year back in the Premier League.“And while you are there, learn everything you need to know to be a top footballer at the top level for a long time from Frank Lampard.“In the meantime, congratulations Phil Foden, you’ve had a great career, but it has fizzled out a bit now.”Wider problemIt isn’t just Foden’s form that is a concern in Paul Scholes‘ view. The former Manchester United and England player is concerned about several of the people competing for the number ten spot with the 2026 World Cup now fewer than 30 days away.Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast earlier in the week, he said: “We’ve got a lot of number 10s, haven’t we?“I have been little bit concerned about their form of late, you think of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer especially. Bellingham hasn’t really played loads for Real Madrid, although he is coming back now.Specifically on the number ten position, he added: “I love Phil Foden.“I think he’s a brilliant, brilliant footballer. For one reason or another, something is not quite right with him, I don’t know what it is.“The question is, what do you do with Bellingham? Is he an 8? Is he a 10? Cole Palmer, brilliant as well.“Rogers from Aston Villa… he had a little bit of a quiet spell but it looks like he’s found his form again. I think you’ve got to go on form with England… I think I’d just go for Morgan Rogers at this point.”
