Alex Borg has proposed the creation of a new authority dedicated to monitoring Malta’s population levels and planning for the country’s future infrastructure and labour needs.Speaking during a Nationalist Party press event, Borg said the authority would be responsible for carrying out a Labour Market Research Study and developing long-term population forecasts linked to work permits, residence permits and key economic sectors.According to Borg, the proposed authority would also help guide decisions on Malta’s infrastructure needs as population growth continues to impact housing, transport, public services and other national systems. The proposal forms part of the PN’s broader plans on population management and migration, with Borg arguing that Malta needs better long-term planning instead of reacting to issues as they arise.Population growth and the increasing reliance on foreign labour have become major political talking points in recent months, particularly in discussions surrounding infrastructure pressure and quality of life. What do you make of this proposal?•
