The Atlanta Braves continued their dominant start to the season Tuesday night, using timely power hitting and strong pitching to defeat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 in the opener of a highly anticipated three-game series between the National League’s top teams.Atlanta improved to a major league-best 29-13 after combining for a one-hitter behind starter Grant Holmes and three relievers. Despite Holmes entering the game after a difficult stretch and not pitching since May 1, the Braves’ offense once again delivered enough firepower to secure the win.Holmes worked four innings, allowing two runs while striking out five and walking four over 78 pitches. The right-hander surrendered a solo home run to Alex Bregman and an RBI groundout by Moisés Ballesteros before turning the game over to the bullpen.Didier Fuentes (2-0) provided a major boost in relief, tossing three scoreless innings to keep the Cubs off balance. Dylan Lee followed with a perfect eighth inning before closer Raisel Iglesias retired the side in order during the ninth for his seventh save of the season. Iglesias has now gone 11 2/3 innings without allowing a run.Offensively, Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski powered Atlanta’s lineup. Riley tied the game in the fifth inning with a towering 409-foot solo home run to left field before Yastrzemski followed later in the inning with a two-run blast that landed near the Chop House restaurant in right field.Yastrzemski finished 2 for 2 with three RBIs, while Dominic Smith continued his hot stretch by going 4 for 4 and scoring twice. The Braves’ offense has become one of baseball’s most dangerous units. Atlanta currently ranks near the top of MLB in slugging percentage, OPS and runs scored while trailing only the New York Yankees in home runs. The team is currently on pace to score more than 900 runs this season, a mark the franchise has only surpassed twice since 1897.The lineup could receive another boost with Ha-Seong Kim returning to action, adding even more depth to an already explosive offense.
