Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) is easily the most creatively bankrupt film in the franchise. Say what you will about Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022) — which indeed have many flaws between them — but at least they tried to steer the series in a new direction by establishing a global playground for the dinosaurs.Rebirth wipes out that fan-favorite premise, goes back to the island setting, messes up established lore, and even features mutant dinosaurs (there are literal winged raptors in this movie). So, it’s high time Universal Pictures finally entertained the idea of a prequel. A new film is reportedly in development, but this franchise needs to go backward, not forward.Credit: Universal PicturesA Jurassic Park Prequel Needs to HappenForget the Jurassic World era — that side of the franchise has now been sucked dry. Functioning theme parks, volcanic eruptions, genetic hybrids, human cloning, and mutant dinosaurs. Been there, done that. The Park era, however, remains fertile for storytelling.Whether it’s a Hammond origin story that predates the 1993 film or something set between one of the films in the Park trilogy (or during one of them), there are many possibilities.Credit: Universal PicturesRelated: Does ‘Dominion’ Tease a ‘Jurassic Park’ Prequel Trilogy? One potential story that comes to mind is the Site B/Isla Sorna evacuation, which John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) mentions briefly in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), explaining to Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) that, following the 1993 incident on Isla Nublar, a hurricane wiped out the facility on Site B — the island where dinosaurs were engineered and raised — forcing InGen to flee and leave the dinosaurs to their own devices.A prequel set before the events of The Lost World that centers on a tropical hurricane ripping through the jungles and manmade facilities on Sorna, all the while scientists desperately try to evacuate and dinosaurs are being freed from their enclosures? Count us in.Credit: Universal PicturesNot only would this make for an interesting and thrilling premise, but it would allow for some never-before-seen dynamic visuals in the franchise. Imagine tense, rain-and-wind-battered (and mud-splattered) sequences similar to those of the first film when the tropical storm makes landfall on Isla Nublar, only this time dialed up to 11 because it’s a hurricane. After all, those nail-biting, atmospheric moments — none of which have any music to back them up — are a huge part of what made Jurassic Park (1993) so memorable.Credit: Universal PicturesWhat About Returning Jurassic Actors?A film set on Site B could even bring back an actor who has appeared in two Jurassic films: Isabella Sermon, who plays human clone Maisie Lockwood in Fallen Kingdom and Dominion. In the latter, however, she also plays her own mother, Charlotte Lockwood, in archival footage from her time working as a scientist on Site B.Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong) could also make an appearance — although he’d need to undergo some digital de-aging. On that note, the film could even feature cameos from other Jurassic Park legacy characters such as Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight), Robert Muldoon (Bob Peck), and Ray Arnold (Samuel L. Jackson), and perhaps even John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). Who’s to say they didn’t take the occasional boat trip to Site B from time to time?Would you like to see a Jurassic Park sequel set during the original trilogy?
