I can’t believe it,” 2023 UK Open winner Gilding said after Wednesday’s success.“I’ve had some great finals before. I remember playing Gary Anderson many years ago, he had a 112 average and I had a 107 average. But I finally got over the line!“Your form dips and rises. You just have to be patient. I’ve had such a good start to the season, I’ve more or less qualified for everything now.“I’ve just got to keep that up and make sure I don’t drop out of the rankings, and I’ll get into the World Matchplay again and the European Championship.”And Gilding revealed that his weight gain helped him to bank his latest title.“I’ve put on a bit of weight. I thought the weight loss helped me win the UK Open but I’ve put on like nearly two stone since that,” he continued.Who is Andrew Gilding?Gilding was a factory worker before taking up darts and previously admitted that playing guitar in a local church band helped him come out of his shell.“It was very briefly but I had a couple of factory jobs in the early to mid-1990s. Always jobs where it was cold,” Gilding told SunSport in 2023.View Tweet: https://t.co/sqO1jCAvcO“Then I was unemployed for a long while and I actually became quite reclusive in my early 30s.“I had some mental health problems and I started to spend all my time indoors.“It was only when I played guitar for a church band that I started getting out more and from that I joined a local pub darts team.“Joining the church band got me mixing with people. From there, I was told to join a super league team. I suppose that’s where it all started.“I’ve never been much of an outgoing person, I have always been painfully shy. I dropped out of school early before getting my results.“I went back to college but even then I was very shy and didn’t mix with people.“But now I have gone from literally being washed up and miserable to the top of the world. What a turnaround. It’s unbelievable.”
