One of Malta’s best-known supermarkets is getting a huge upgrade.Smart Supermarket in Birkirkara is set to be transformed into a modern shopping destination, with plans including a brand-new mall, multiple retail outlets, restaurants and cafés, while the supermarket itself will remain open throughout the redevelopment.Operating since 1981, Smart Supermarket will also undergo a complete redesign as part of the project, giving the long-standing retail landmark a fresh new look.The development will also feature a five-level underground car park aimed at improving accessibility for shoppers.One of the most noticeable changes will be along Naxxar Road, where the building’s façade will be set back by almost 1,000 square metres to create a new public open space, making the area more pedestrian-friendly.Civil works have been awarded to ESC Group, with construction expected to take around 16 months. The revamped shopping mall is currently scheduled to open its doors in 2027.Once complete, the project is expected to transform the Birkirkara site into a larger retail and dining hub while keeping Smart Supermarket at its core.Credit: Smart Supermarket•
