Others questioned whether it was appropriate to associate a natural landmark with such a recent loss, suggesting that the focus should instead remain on remembering the victim through other forms of commemoration.The proposal follows Saturday evening’s tragedy off Comino, when the natural rock arch near Santa Marija Battery suddenly collapsed onto a passing jet ski carrying three tourists.Emergency services were immediately dispatched after the Armed Forces of Malta’s Rescue Coordination Centre received reports of the rockfall. Two people were rescued and taken for medical treatment, while a major search operation was launched for the third passenger.Divers from AFM Gozo Command and the 3rd Regiment later recovered the body of Kin Hei Wong, who had become trapped underwater. The Civil Protection Department also assisted in the rescue operation, and a magisterial inquiry has since been opened into the circumstances surrounding the incident.The collapse of the arch not only reshaped the coastline but also resulted in the formation of a small rocky islet, making the tragic loss of life inseparable from the geological event itself.While the naming of geographical features falls under official procedures and would require approval from the relevant authorities, Cilia’s suggestion has already sparked discussion about remembrance, heritage and the ways in which significant moments in history are commemorated.Whether the proposal gains official recognition remains to be seen.
