Crim Soft, is an independent Ugandan musician who has built a successful career outside of traditional broadcast media by focusing on digital promotion and producing quality music that resonates with his audience.We caught up with him and shared with us his journey and into the industry below; Who is Crim Soft to those who don’t know him? Give us a brief background about your childhood, family, and education.My real name is Mwesigwa Joshua Dan, and I was born and raised in Uganda. I started my music journey while I was at campus, where I met my producer, Gabla Dexta.I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and also trained as a Pharmacy Dispenser at Makerere University. I come from a big family, and most of my relatives are gospel musicians. However, only one of my brothers and I chose to pursue secular music.Who inspired you to join the music industry, and when did you start doing music?I started singing in church as an a cappella artist in the Seventh-day Adventist Church during my childhood. While at university, I began writing my own songs in my second year, but I only recorded my first song after graduating, which marked the beginning of my professional music career.My musical inspirations have changed over time, but currently I really admire CKay’s style of music.Who are your favorite artists locally and across Africa?Locally, I would say Azawi. On the African scene, I have several artists I admire, but my inspirations keep evolving depending on the music they’re creating.As an independent artist whose music isn’t heavily featured on mainstream radio or television, does that affect your career despite performing well on streaming platforms?Not really. I get a lot of streams on digital platforms, and my music also receives airplay on several radio stations, so it hasn’t affected me much.How do you navigate digital platforms to monetize your music and build a dedicated grassroots fan base?I focus on digital promotion and work with credible music distributors to ensure my music reaches the right audiences.Platforms like Spotify and Apple Music rely heavily on algorithms. How do you connect with your core audience without mainstream media support?The key is producing good music. Quality music naturally attracts listeners and keeps them coming back.How has the absence of mainstream broadcast pressure influenced the type of music you create?I’ve taken time to understand my audience and give them the kind of music they enjoy. At the same time, I don’t lose myself in the process. I always balance my personal musical taste with what my fans love.How Dax Vibez and Rema Namakula’s collaboration came to lifeHow do you fund your music projects, and what challenges do you face as a fully independent artist?I finance my projects through income from live performances and music streaming. Besides music, I also own a couple of successful businesses in Kampala, which help support my career financially.From Kampala’s underground music scene to the global digital landscape, how do you think geography and culture affect an artist’s reach?Language plays a big role when you’re trying to reach international audiences, but I believe your style of music matters even more. The most important thing is being unique and understanding what you do best instead of simply following trends.Looking back, how has building your career outside traditional broadcast media made you a more resilient artist?It has helped me build a stronger and more loyal online fan base, especially across digital streaming platforms.
