Disney is retiring all of the horses currently working on Main Street, U.S.A. at one theme park. While every version of Main Street, U.S.A. boasts its own unique quirks, horses are a regular feature at several locations. At Walt Disney’s OG theme park, you can find horses pulling an old-fashioned trolley. The same is true over at Magic Kingdom.Credit: DisneyFurther afield, Hong Kong Disneyland only uses gas-powered or motorized vehicles, while Shanghai Disneyland also lacks horses on its Main Street equivalent, Mickey Avenue. Now, another Disney park is going horse-free.End of an Era: Disney Park Scraps HorsesDisneyland Paris is set to remove horses from its version of Main Street, U.S.A. by the end of 2026.The French theme park resort made the announcement today, confirming that the horse-drawn streetcars that have passed through the land since opening in 1992 will be retired.Credit: DisneyOther horses were previously retired from Disneyland Paris after Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show – an interactive dinner show in Disney Village, the resort’s shopping and dining district – permanently closed in 2020.Currently, the page for its horse-drawn streetcars is still listed on the Disneyland Paris website. “If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the sidewalks between Town Square and Central Plaza, then why not travel in style?” Disney says. “Just climb aboard one of Main Street’s ornate horse-drawn streetcars and let your majestic Percheron clip clop along the brick-paved streets while you relax in ultimate splendour and comfort.”Disneyland Paris has yet to confirm the next home for its horses. It also hasn’t confirmed plans for the backstage area in Frontierland where the horses are currently housed. This area could, however, presumably be demolished to make space for further park expansions.Fans Split on Removal of HorsesFans are split on the decision to retire the horses. On Reddit, one fan noted, “It’s probably kinder to those horses, to be honest.”Credit: DisneyAnother wrote, “That’s good, horses should be in fields not Theme Parks.”Similarly, one wrote, “It’s 100% about cutting back on the guest experience to save a few quid. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive.”Notably, it’s not the first European destination to strip back its animal elements. Last year, Efteling permanently discontinued its Raveleijn show, which featured five riders on horseback alongside stunt choreography, ravens, and a mechanical fire-breathing dragon. Meanwhile, a ban went into effect in Paris in 2025 that banned pony rides for children in its public parks. However, some remain cynical about Disney’s motivation for retiring the Main Street horses.Credit: Disney“Eh this is one cost saving measure disguised as caring that I can live with,” one said.Beyond the Main Street, U.S.A. trolley cars, guests can occasionally spot horses during certain parades worldwide. For example, the Headless Horseman rides a horse (hence the name) during the Boo-To-You Halloween Parade at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom.Famously, an incident in 2020 saw a horse ridden by Merida get spooked by a balloon during a character cavalcade, sparking questions about the ethics of using horses in theme parks.Guests can currently find horses at Tri-Circle-D Ranch in The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Breeds include Appaloosas, Arabians, Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons, and Quarter Horses, plus Shetland Ponies. Horses are available for trail rides, carriage rides (also available at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside), and, during the holidays, holiday sleigh rides. Will you miss the horses on Main Street, U.S.A.?The post Disney Stripping All Horses From Main Street, U.S.A., Ending Decades-Long Tradition appeared first on Inside the Magic.
