talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers needed to step in to stop a group of England fans from having their flag confiscated at the World Cup.The travelling England support have been bringing flags into stadiums across the country this summer as they back the Three Lions to win the first major piece of international silverware since 1966.England fans are out in force in Atlanta as the Three Lions look to book a last-16 spotGettyHowever, one that was brought in by Hartlepool fans was misinterpreted by staff in Atlanta ahead of their round of 32 clash against DR Congo.MisunderstandingHartlepool’s nickname is the Monkey Hangers, which Carruthers had to explain to officials had no racial connotations.“It is some stadium I have to tell you, the flags are all being adorned around,” Carruthers explained live on air.“I just wanted to highlight something actually, because we are in the home of the civil rights movement here in Atlanta, the birthplace of Martin Luther King.“And I caught some stewards chatting about taking down some of the Hartlepool United flags earlier on.“For anyone who doesn’t know, obviously Hartlepool United’s nickname, they’re the Monkey Hangers, anybody from Hartlepool, they call themselves the Monkey Hammock Hangers because of 19th century folklore regarding hanging a monkey that they thought was a French spy.“And I’ve just had to try and explain that so they didn’t take the flags down as they were worried that there were racist connotations to them.“I just explained it and showed them the background to it, so the Hartlepool United flags are still there alongside Bristol City, AFC Bournemouth, Norwich, Swindon Town, the Redditch Blues which is always here, as well Dulwich Hamlet too.Hartlepool play their home matches at Victoria Park“There are far more English fans in here than there are the Democratic Republic of Congo and plenty of USA fans as well who are all supporting England.“I’ve seen some half-and-half shirts, USA on the back, England on the front because obviously many people around this city have got English families additionally“And then there are lots of people who just want to come and see England because it’s such a pleasure to see a team like this in a stadium like this.”What next for England?England will face Mexico in the next round of the 2026 World Cup should they overcome DR Congo on Wednesday evening.The tournament co-hosts got the better of South American side Ecuador at the Azteca in the early hours of Wednesday morning [UK Time].And the last-16 clash will kick off at 1am on Monday morning [UK Time].
