Sales action returned to Arqana on Tuesday with the first session of the two-day Summer Sale, at which the Haras du Mesnil stallion Doctor Dino was all the rage among the National Hunt stores on offer. Haras de Montaigu's Doctor Dino colt topped the day's trade when sold for €240,000 to Nat Barnett. After a lengthy exchange in the ring, the son of the Listed-placed hurdler Out Of Risk (No Risk At All) was secured to join trainer Hugo Merienne. “We bought three yearlings here in November and came back to purchase one more horse,” said Barnett, who bought the two-year-old from the family of Grade 1-winning hurdler Echoes In Rain with Will Sangwin. “This is a magnificent horse by an exceptional sire, with a remarkable pedigree page. We saw him on Sunday, and that was all it took to convince us.”Tom Malone was also in the market for a Doctor Dino store and went to €220,000 for a filly he described as “an absolute queen” from the same family as the session-topper.Consigned by Haras des Sablonnets, the two-year-old is the first foal out of the black-type performer Santamarin, herself a Saint Des Saints half-sister to the aforementioned Echoes In Rain.“She is out of a black-type mare, and her second dam is black-type as well,” the agent said. “She moved better than most of the geldings today, which really impressed us. We are delighted to have bought her. I acquired her for Oliver Brendon, who already has several horses in training with Jamie Snowden. We rate her highly and hope that, in time, she will perform at the highest level.”The first foal of the Jonjo O'Neill-trained prolific winner Annie Mc (Mahler) was another Doctor Dino store to take high order in the sale, with Mags O'Toole placing the successful bid for the Windermere Stud-consigned colt at €205,000. Agent for all seasons Anthony Bromley was busy in Deauville, and on behalf of longstanding owner Dai Walters he signed for Doctor Dino colt Orage d'Ainay at €145,000. Sold by Fairway Consignment, the two-year-old is out of a full-sister to the G1 Prix Ferdinand Dufaure winner Fleur d'Ainay from a family which also includes Alan King's G2 Cleeve Hurdle winner Crystal d'Ainay.“We absolutely fell in love with this horse – he comes from a remarkable French bloodline,” said Bromley. The selection of two-year-old stores also contained the Saint Des Saints filly Quart Des Anges, who sold from the Channel Consignment for €200,000 to Laurent Benoit's Broadhurst Agency, while the same sum was given by Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International for a Kapgarde filly out of the G1 Royal Bond Novices' Hurdle winner Statuaire (Muhtathir).Twenty-eight Flat-bred two-year-olds were offered through the sale's small breeze-up section, with 21 sold for a total of €391,000 and top price of €52,000.The strength of the store market led to improved figures despite a drop in the day's overall clearance rate from 80% to 71%. From 213 horses offered throughout the session, 152 were sold for €6,614,000, a rise of 19% on the equivalent day's trade last year. The average was up by 28% to €43,513 and the median of €32,000 compared well to €24,000 in 2025.Stallions traded in the ringThe young National Hunt stallion King Edward had led proceedings for the earlier part of the day when sold by Busherstown Stables for €195,000. Darren O'Dwyer signed for the 10-year-old son of Martaline, who has been standing at Haras des Rouges Terres for a fee of €2,000. Recent results at the Goffs Arkle Sale, where three stores by King Edward sold for an average of €46,667, prompted O'Dwyer to take a chance on him for the Irish market. He said, “His offspring sold very well at the Goffs sales. We had several clients looking for a stallion, and when he came onto the market, we seized the opportunity. He has a very solid profile, his statistics speak for themselves, and he boasts an excellent pedigree. He will now be returning to Ireland. We haven't decided where he will stand yet – we're going to discuss it with the whole team to choose the best option for him.”Owned and bred by Louis Baudron, King Edward won the G3 Prix du Duc d'Anjou over hurdles at Auteuil and is out of a half-sister to the Grade 1-winning chaser Kotkikova, who is also by Martaline. Members of his first crop are now four-year-olds and include the bumper winner Milan Rouge. King Edward wasn't the only stallion to be offered on Tuesday. The treble Group 1-winning miler Charm Spirit, who started his career standing alternate seasons at Tweenhills in England and Haras de Bonneval in Normandy, has spent to the last six years solely in France, most recently at Haras du Grand Courgeon. The sire of top sprinter Shaquille was sold to agent Eoin Sullivan for €50,000.The 15-year-old Charm Spirit, who had previously been sold in the same ring as a yearling by his breeder Ecurie des Monceaux for €140,000, has been bought to stand in Indonesia, which is now also home to the 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Galileo Gold. The Summer Sale continues on Wednesday with a session of horses in training.
