Universal Studios is reducing the minimum ticket price for one park from September.When it comes to theme parks like Universal and Disney, ticket prices usually only move in one direction. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, both day tickets and annual passes have soared in price, reaching record-highs at various parks.Credit: UniversalBack in November 2023, Universal Orlando Resort followed in the footsteps of Walt Disney World Resort by quietly raising prices on its single- and two-day tickets. Two years later, it also introduced a parking fee increase.International resorts have also felt the burn. Universal Studios Japan increased its annual pass prices last August. The Universal Prime Annual Pass Standard jumped from ¥21,000 ($129) to ¥22,000 ($129) from November 4, 2025. Meanwhile, the Universal Prime Annual Pass Grand Royal went from ¥48,800 ($300) to ¥50,800 ($312) per adult.But now, Universal is making the surprise move of lowering its day ticket prices.Universal Introduces Cheaper Park TicketsToday, Universal announced that one of its parks will introduce a new ticket pricing structure.Credit: Dick Thomas Johnson, FlickrEffective September 1, Universal Studios Japan’s Studio Pass prices will start at ¥8,400 ($52), ¥500 ($3) lower than the previous minimum. The new pricing will apply to tickets released from July 1 for visits on or after September 1.The resort is also offering a truly dynamic pricing model for its tickets. That means prices will rise and fall depending on how busy the park is expected to be on any given day – and that booking earlier may be key to securing the cheapest tickets possible.Responses to the price changes are mixed, but many seem cynical about the structure.“So, that’s what they call an ‘early bird discount,’ right?” wrote one fan on X. “Well, it’s only natural that same-day tickets would be the most expensive, so I think it’s fine.”Credit: Dean Lin, FlickrSimilarly, another wrote, “It’s the early-bird discount, huh! It’s an interesting decision amid all sorts of things going up in price!”And one said, “If it’s 500 yen, you can make it back with the other content in the park, right? In the midst of all these price hikes, getting news [coverage] for a price cut is a smart move.”Universal Orlando Resort also utilizes dynamic pricing to an extent. However, the difference is that a one-day base ticket tends to start from around $140 – well over twice the amount of Universal Studios Japan’s lowest-price ticket.Credit: UniversalFor as little as $52, guests at Universal Studios Japan can enjoy everything from SUPER NINTENDO WORLD (complete with both Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country) and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Minion Park and Jurassic Park – all similar offerings to what’s found at Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure.The discount may only be a few dollars, but it reinforces something theme park fans have known for years: Japan remains one of the best-value places to visit a world-class park.
