That would entirely depend on how they left it. I worked as a pet sitter for a while and still do so occasionally, and it's completely possible to have a perfectly fine dog left behind for the duration of the trip. They usually have about a day of adjustment where you just meet them where they are, and then they're good the rest of the time, and ecstatic when their people come home.
