A big decision looms for the Minnesota Vikings ahead of training camp.Minnesota are in the midst of a quarterback battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, and a decision on who starts under center come Week 1 will need to be made by the end of summer.Minnesota’s QB battle is between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler MurrayGettyAfter missing his entire rookie season through injury, McCarthy was handed the keys in 2025, but failed to impress.Another injury-riddled campaign saw him start just 10 games, throwing for 1632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.Murray, on the other hand, was released by the Arizona Cardinals at the start of the offseason. The 29-year-old led Arizona to the playoffs just once in his seven-year tenure, and never quite found his footing in the red and white. Many believe the current favorite to win the job is former No. 1 pick Murray, but ex-NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has sent a clear warning to the Vikings over his long-term future.“I do think it’ll be a one-year great experiment,” Fitzpatrick said on The Rich Eisen Show. “It’s going to work well and then potentially trail off after that, but I’m excited to see how it goes this season… I’m not saying they won’t keep him for more than a year.“I think his best year with Minnesota will be his first year, and if they keep him after that, it’s going to trail off because some of the issues that came up in Arizona are going to be the same issues that follow him.”“Everybody knows that the first year in the offense, everything is going to be fresh, new, and fun, and they’re going to go out there and play really well.“Then, in that next year, as things get stale and you really have to focus on and hone somebody’s leadership skills, I think that’s when you’ll see it trail off. I think it’s going to be a great show.”J.J. McCarthy has shot at winning QB competitionAt OTA’s, McCarthy was described as having a ‘salty’ attitude, particularly when discussing his relationship with Murray. The reality was that Murray also played better than McCarthy.Dustin Baker of Vikings Territory highlighted why the No.10 overall pick in 2024 still has a good shot at winning the starting role.“Later in June, McCarthy closed the gap, while Murray threw a few curious interceptions in Eagan,” Baker wrote.“Some banged the drum for McCarthy having a real shot at upsetting Murray during the duel in July and August. The door might not be closed on McCarthy just yetGetty“Murray remains the heavy favorite, but based on both men’s performance at minicamp as a whole, McCarthy remains a contender for the job he held indisputably in 2025.”McCarthy is the man the Vikings once trusted. They allowed Sam Darnold to walk and become a Super Bowl champion, then they watched Daniel Jones turn his career around with the Indianapolis Colts.McCarthy’s former QB coach has urged them not to give up on him, and it appears the ship hasn’t sailed just yet.
