Seven cases of disability Blue Badge misuse were uncovered during a single inspection at Mater Dei Hospital’s parking area, the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD) has revealed.According to the CRPD, its Enforcement Team found seven vehicles displaying Blue Badges that were being used by relatives of persons with a disability, even though the badge holder was not physically present in the vehicle at the time of the inspection. The commission reminded the public that Blue Badges are intended to help persons with disabilities access designated parking spaces when they are travelling themselves and should not be used by family members or others in their absence. The inspection forms part of the CRPD’s wider enforcement efforts, which include carrying out checks, providing training to police and law enforcement officers, and ensuring the Blue Badge register remains up to date. The commission said these measures are aimed at protecting accessible parking spaces so they remain available for the people who genuinely need them.Should there be tougher penalties for misusing disability parking badges?•
