Neil Agius Marks Five Years Since Historic World Record Swim

Wait 5 sec.

Maltese endurance swimmer Neil Agius is celebrating five years since completing the world’s longest unassisted current-neutral swim, a feat that cemented his place in open-water swimming history.Reflecting on the anniversary, Agius recalled setting off from the Italian island of Linosa on 28th June 2021 with no certainty of success, only belief in himself and his team. After 52 hours and 10 minutes in the water, he reached Xlendi, Gozo, setting a new world record. The achievement came after his previous longest ultra swim had lasted just 28 hours.“So you could say this swim changed everything,” Agius wrote. “But more than that, it changed me.”He credited the experience with strengthening his connection to the ocean, teaching him the importance of surrounding himself with people who always have his back and proving that what once seemed impossible can become possible.Agius would go on to break his own record two years later, but said the lessons learned during that first historic swim laid the foundation for everything that followed.A remarkable milestone in Maltese sporting history!•
