Malta has reached a major milestone in its Second Malta–Sicily Interconnector (IC2) project, with the successful completion of the manufacturing and testing of a 103km high-voltage subsea cable that will strengthen the country’s electricity connection with mainland Europe. The cable was manufactured over the course of a year at Nexans’ facility in Charleston, USA, before undergoing comprehensive testing to ensure it meets the highest standards of quality, reliability and performance. It has now been securely spooled onto a dedicated carousel and is ready to be loaded onto the Nexans Electra cable-laying vessel, with installation expected to begin later this year. Preparatory marine route clearance has also been completed, allowing the project to move into its next phase.Energy Minister Miriam Dalli described the achievement as a major step forward, saying the second interconnector will enhance Malta’s electricity resilience, strengthen its connection to mainland Europe, support the integration of renewable energy and contribute to the country’s long-term energy transition. The €300 million infrastructure project has been awarded €261 million in European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) financing and has been recognised as an Operation of Strategic Importance under the EU’s 2021–2027 programme.Once completed, the second interconnector is expected to improve Malta’s energy security while helping the country transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable electricity system. Were you aware Malta is building a second electricity link to Sicily?•
